“Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)”
Artist: Stan Getz/Joao GIlberto/Astrud Gilberto/Antonio Carlos Jobim
Album: Getz | Gilberto
Quiet nights of quiet stars
quiet chords from my guitar
floating on the silence that surrounds us
Quiet thoughts and quiet dreams
quiet walks by quiet streams
and a window that looks out on CorcovadoVerses forever etched in my memory, a melody that simmered devours us, a perfect recording that features the exquisite blending of Getz’s lush saxo, Astrud’s sultry vocals, Joao Gilberto’s consecrated guitar and Jobim’s magestic piano. A victory for Jazz and Bossa Nova that helped to pave the path for Brazilian music to join Jazz. 47 years later, this song remains a milestone.
Take your time, savor it.

Orquestra de Cordas da Grota is a volunteer organization in Brazil that teaches youths from the slums of Niteroi in Rio de Janeiro state to play string instruments and the classical repertoire. This is their arrangement of Pachelbel’s Canon. It begins as a straight reading of the score, but then percussion beats pop out of nowhere, and this too-familiar pieces is enlivened with a samba rhythm. Give it a listen; I found it captivating, and I hope you do too.
